How miners, fishers are taking life out of Lake Victoria
Twenty meters under the ground, lit only by the torches strapped to their heads, a group of eight men are seeking their fortune.
The cramped tunnels have been hewn out of the bare rock using hammers, chisels, bare hands and many days of their own toil.
The goal: to strike it lucky by finding a rich seam of gold-containing minerals that will transform their lives.
The Centre for Environment Justice and Development (CEJAD), a member of the project steering committee on Minamata Convention Mercury Initial Activities project implemented by Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources led the Ministries of Mining and Environment officials to a fact finding field visit to the gold mining areas of Lolgorian, Migori, Bondo, Vihiga and Kakamega for a rapid assessment of mercury use in ASGM communities.
- CEJAD has released a video documentary on lead paints and the impacts of lead exposure to children in marking the International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week of Action, 2018. The video is to create awareness on lead poisoning from leaded paints especially to children and provides information about how leaded paints are produced, why lead has been used in paints before, paint as a source of lead exposure to children, the most vulnerable group affected by lead poisoning from paint and the economic burden associated with lead exposure. The video also reveals the results of an analysis study done by CEJAD in partnership with IPEN on lead in solvent-based paints in Kenya in the year 2017.
